Literature Analysis #2

General
1    Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is about the harsh journey to the continent of Africa. The narrator and a few other men listen to a man named Marlow recap this harsh and dangerous journey to Africa. He traveled on the Nellie, a British ship, for a Belgium ivory trading company. During his journey he encounters the savageness between the people who are trying to colonize Africa during that time and the natives. He soon finds himself drought between the struggle within the Company he works for. He also learns the cold hard truth of about a Russian named Kurtz. Kurtz is a madman who Marlow decides to take him because he very ill, but he soon dies after he begins to travel.
2       I guess a theme of the novel is imperialism and what it does to the men and women involved in the action of imperialism and the madness that is derived from imperialism.
The novel has a cynical tone to it but at sometimes it is sad because of the horrible and gruesome things that Marlow experiences. “Not a living thing was seen on the shore.”
Symbolism – Flies in the story are a great symbol for death because they appear like when a slave dies in chapter one and when Kurtz dies.
Personification – “The tidal current runs to and fro in its unceasing service.”
Tone – “Not a living thing was seen on the shore.”
Characterization - “He was the only man of us who still ‘followed the sea.’ The worst thing that could be said about him was that he did not represent his class.”
Foreshadowing – in the beginning of the story Marlow talks about how a Roman conqueror would have to deal with “…cold, fog, tempests, disease, exile, and death…” which is a clear foreshadow for his journey.
Metaphor – “The water shone pacifically: the sky, without a speck, was a benign immensity of unstained light; the very mist on the Essex marsh was like a gauzy and radiant fabric, hung from the wooded rises island, and draping the low shores in diaphanous folds.”
Simile – “His eyes, of the usual blue, were perhaps remarkably cold, and he certainly could make his glance fall on one as trenchant and heavy as an axe.”
Irony - “Let us hope that the man who can talk so well of love in general will find some particular reason to spare us the time.”
Setting - “The sea-reach of the Thames stretched before us like the beginning of an interminable waterway.”

Characterization
1    Direct – “He resembled a pilot, which to a seaman is trustworthiness personified.” , “He [Marlow] had sunken cheeks, a yellow complexion, a straight back, an ascetic aspect, and, with his arms dropped, the palms of hands outwards, resembled an idol.”
Indirect – “He was the only man of us who still ‘followed the sea.’ The worst thing that could be said about him was that he did not represent his class.” , “Marlow ceased, and sat apart, indistinct and silent, in the pose of a meditating Buddha.”
Using both indirect and direct characterization is very helpful in developing the characters in the story because it gives to different ways for a reader to meet a character and it provides a full characterization because that is how we meet people in real life.
2    The author uses both syntax and diction when focusing on a character because while Conrad has is own unique syntax and diction he can not only use it to fully describe characters but he also sometimes uses different syntax and diction from what he is used to, to allow a different approach to the characters that may seem one way but now with a different perspective you can fully understand the character.
3    Marlow is definitely a dynamic round character because he is going on this adventure with the what as we know the slightest clue of what he is in for. We get the feeling that going in he doesn’t really mind imperialism because he was on the good side of it. But when we journeys on he begins to realize that imperialism isn’t really what he thought it to be and is horrified by the damage it has done to so many people of all races. He completely changes his views on the topic making him a dynamic character.
4      I feel like I really did meet Marlow because the whole story was based around his adventure though it may be harsh, because I learned how he would react to certain situations and how he went about doing everything so I kind of get a sense of who he really is in the novel.

Tools That Change The Way We Think

The Internet and other technology have completely changed the way i think about anything. The internet especially has greatly impacted my life considering it is always there and with a smartphone it is just one touch away. The internet is so vast and there are so many websites that it is easy to get distracted. My time management thinking has greatly changed because I can easily find something to do on the internet like watch videos or go on facebook instead of doing something else that needs to be done instead. And with the vast amount of information on the internet some of it is bound to change your views and ideas on certain subjects whatever they may be. I hadn't realized it before but now that I think about it I don't think I don't think I could last a day without my iPhone or the Internet. Thats how greatly it has affected my life and I think others can agree with me. And since everything is so acessable through the internet it is easy to go one the internet and do nothing than to do something at all.

Who Was Shakespeare

Many websites explain that there is a lot to know about who Shakespeare really was and that he was a genius writer and poet who wrote extravagant plays about various fictional lives. There are literally to many websites to list so I will post a wikipedia website as a website that has many more sources in the resource section but there is one particular website that I found interesting that describes Shakespeare in a different matter ( as shown below).

To Facebook or Not to Facebook

My initial impressions of Facebook is basically a time consumer. It is great for connections and since I myself have a Facebook account it is a great way to see what is going on in the lives around us. The benefit is that is it a great resource for things that are happening but the bad thing is is that you have to give it a certain amount of information about yourself in order to have a Facebook so you are just basically giving out a bunch of information about yourself to basically anyone that Facebook gives it too. After discussing it I realize that now it could be a hazard in life but I have become so accustomed to using it that it will stay in my life. I just now know that i have to be careful with what I put on Facebook.

Midterm Autopsy

Its impossible to be perfect at everything and for me especially, vocabulary. Theres always those one or two words on each test that I can't remember the definition to for the life of me. And with 4 of the tests it adds up but i actually did pretty good i thought. It wasn't all that bad but still difficult to remember those few words that just don't stick with you. I believe that the studying that i did helped alot too and without it I wouldn't have been able to do as good as I did. But I can definitely do better on the next big vocabulary test that as the past dictates I can predict we will have one in the future. And I think the best way that I can prepare for that is by studying those few words that I have a hard time remembering more than I usually do so that I will have them down and maybe this next test I can achieve perfection.

Midterm Relfection

I actually felt pretty confident about how i did on the midterm. I just hope it isn't false confidence. It all went pretty well, it was multiple choice so that helped a little bit too. I had a little problem on one of the lists because i didn't study it as much as the other lists but luckily i could kind of figure out and remember what the definitions were. I think that the next big vocab test that we have will be a lot harder and I will definitely study harder and more to prepare for it.

Dear Ophelia

I read about your problem with your family and the prince and I know I may not be able to show empathy for your problem but i might be able to help. I know it sounds as if your problem is a quagmire but its not. My idea about your problem is purely hedonistic. Don't listen to your cantankerous brother and father because they don't understand you or your prince. This is an ecumenical problem that a lot of people have problems with, and the best way to go about it is to pursue what you want. If that means searching for beatitude with your prince, than by all means, do it. Its about you, not about what other people want from you. You need to make sure you feel euphoria with the person you care for because that is what matters. You must do what makes you happy even if it means seeing your prince sub rosa and seeing how he truely feels about you. If he is effusive about his love than he is yours. This is my volition to you.

Midterm Study Guide

So normally when I study for a vocab test i like to make flashcards and basically study from those. In the past this has really worked well for me. I normally make sure i know five at a time and then move onto the next five when i know the previous but constantly making sure I know the previous words. It works really well and it sticks in my brain. Also when I see something in the definition that could possible remind me of the word and visa versa I make sure to remember it because it really helps. So basically im going to try and memorize as many words a night that i can but making sure at the same time that i do in fact know them.
